
Giants hold on to defeat Contra Costa in season opener
The College of the Sequoias football team clung to a 16-14 victory on the road against Contra Costa on Saturday.
COS did all of their scorings in the first half, with their first points of the season coming on a safety in the first quarter.
Contra Costa would take a 7-2 lead momentarily after a 15-yard scoop and score fumble recovery in the second quarter.
Five minutes later, Giants running back Andrew Azua would cap off a 10 play, 80 yards drive, with an 11-yard touchdown scamper.
With Sequoias in front 9-7, the Comets had one last opportunity to gain momentum before halftime.
Giants defensive back Andrew Ballin-Armstrong squashed Contra Costa's chance when he picked off Comets quarterback Davin Lemon-Rodriguez.
Sequoias quarterback Nolan LeForge ran into the end zone with 42 seconds remaining in the first half, putting the Giants up 16-14 at the break.
The Giants defense was lights out in the second half preserving the lead and limiting the Comets to just one touchdown in the fourth quarter.
LeForge finished 20-32 for 143 yards, with one rushing touchdown and one interception. Azua ran for one touchdown and 41-yards on 12 carries.
COS will host back-to-back home games starting this Saturday against Feather River College at 11 a.m.. Admission is free at the Mineral King Bowl courtesy of Pepsi.
