Giants fall at No. 7 Laney College
The College of the Sequoias football team gave seventh-ranked Laney College an upset scare, but a 14 point Eagles fourth quarter helped propel the hosts to a 34-17 victory on Friday.
With the loss, Sequoias' losing streak expands to four games, dropping to 2-5 on the season.
The Giants had a 10-6 lead in the second quarter with a Ryan Buchanan 30-yard field goal and a Gus Villareal 28-yard pass to Phillip Adams.
Laney took a 13-10 lead into halftime when Noah Suszckiewicz found Devond Blair for a 22-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles scored 44 seconds before time expired in the first half.
On the first play from scrimmage for COS, Villareal hooked up with Adams on a 83-yard bullet. Sequoias went up 17-13 and put Laney on upset alert.
It did not last long as the Eagles proceeded to score 21 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters. Marcel Dancy capped off the scoring with a 13-yard rushing touchdown.
COS slightly outgained Laney 351-350 in total yards.
Villareal led the Giants with 275-yards passing, going 15-23 with one touchdown and one interception.
Adams registered five catches for 184-yards and two touchdowns.
Safety Rook Landers had a team-high 15 total tackles for the Giants in the defeat. Jailyn Mays had the lone sack for COS, and Preveon Alexander registered the only interception.
The Giants look to snap their losing streak at home on Saturday. Sequoias host San Joaquin Delta at the Mineral King Bowl, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
