VISALIA - The College of the Sequoias softball team started their season last Friday and are off to a respectable start. They are 3-2 in their recent homestand and will play at Chabot on Friday.
Here is a quick breakdown of each game in the past week:
COS vs. Foothill (Doubleheader):
Game 1: COS started their season off with a 13-7 win over Foothill. The Giants overcame an early 3-0 deficit in the first inning to take a 6-4 lead in the fifth. Foothill added three more runs to go up 7-6, but COS was not done just yet.
Madison Montemayor's single started the rally in the bottom of the fifth and the Giants plated 7 runs in the final two frames.
Ashley Paradine got the win, going the distance, pitching seven innings.
Montemayor was 3-for-3 at the plate and had two RBI. Josey Burke went 2-for-3 with a team-high 3 RBI in the victory.
Game 2: In the second game COS once again faced a deficit in the first inning, but this time they could not overcome it. Foothill defeated the Giants 8-0 in six innings.
Foothill scored six runs on a pair of singles and a three-run homerun by Marcella Kay.
The Giants bats fell silent, as they only registered four hits in game two.
Ashley Guzman pitched all six innings for COS, taking the loss on five earned runs.
COS vs. Siskiyous (Doubleheader):
Game 1: Brittney Howard's single that scored Ashley Guzman helped led the Giants to 7-5 victory.
The game was knotted up at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth when Guzman got on base. Howard's single plated Guzman. Howard then scored on a Burke single.
Paradine pitched seven strong for her second victory of the season.
Game 2: It was a team effort that allowed COS to defeat Siskiyous 4-2.
Alondra Zavala and Breanne Tabarez both registered one RBI each.
Paradine pitched for the second straight game and went five innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. Guzman got her first save of the season, pitching the final two frames.
COS vs. Bakersfield:
The Giants fell to rival Bakersfield 10-5 on Tuesday. COS scored first but the Renegades powered back in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.
Bakersfield scored a combined 7 runs in the three innings.
Burke had 2 RBI despite going 1-for-4 in the loss. Montemayor was 3-for-4 from the plate with one RBI.
Paradine received the loss, allowing 8 earned runs on 9 hits.
