Football struggles on the road
STOCKTON - COS Football dropped its fourth straight game as they were defeated 53-31 by San Joaquin Delta at Lawrence A. DeRicco Field.
Sequoias (3-5, 0-3 VC) started out positive, scoring the first touchdown of the game. Courvoisier King recovered Jewison Dawkins fumble on the 1-yard line and dove into the end zone.
San Joaquin Delta (2-6, 1-2 VC) quarterback Logan Lopes looked to even it up when he found Jermaine Williams for a 40-yard touchdown, but the extra point was blocked, keeping COS ahead 7-6.
After a Ryan Buchanan COS field goal in the first quarter to extend their lead to 10-6, the Mustangs scored 47 unanswered points. San Joaquin Delta took a commanding 32-10 lead into halftime.
COS starting quarterback Josh Sierra's night was done at the break. He had 120 yards on 11 completions in the first half. Sierra finished with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.
Lopes day was done as well at halftime. He finished the better of the two, with 4 touchdowns and 210 yards.
The Giants and QB Thomas Wilson broke the Mustangs run when they scored with 6:26 left in the fourth quarter.
Wilson would go on to throw two more touchdowns to run his total up to three on the night. He had 200 yards on 20 completions, but his second half effort wasn't enough. San Joaquin Delta would get their first conference win, and its second victory, this season.
The Giants look to keep their bowl eligibility alive. They have to win the rest of their games this season to have a chance of clinching a berth. COS will begin its challenge on the road, traveling to Hayward to play Chabot on Saturday at 6 p.m.
