Game Preview: COS vs. Fresno City
COS Football will have their season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m., as they host Fresno City at the Giant-Chevrolet Mineral King Bowl.
Both teams are not ranked in the CCCAA State Poll, but the two are included in the Regional Poll. Fresno City is ranked No. 12, while COS is two spots lower, tied at No. 14 with San Joaquin Delta.
The Giants are no longer eligible for a bowl game, but Rams are one win away from a bowl berth.
Here is a quick breakdown of each team before the Valley Conference matchup:
COS Giants (3-6, 0-4 VC):
COS look to spoil the Rams chances of a bowl game, and the Giants will count on both of their quarterback's. Sophomore Thomas Wilson threw for 210-yards and had 2 touchdowns on the ground last week against Chabot. Wilson's legs will have to create plays for Sequoias, and he is capable of doing so. Wilson is fourth in the conference with six total rushing scores.
Sophomore Josh Sierra threw his fifth touchdown pass of the season last Saturday. He has been used as a change of pace quarterback in games, and has thrived in moments.
The Giants defense have allowed an average of 181.2 yards rushing, and 241.6 yards passing per game. They will have to create stops and give their offense a chance.
In addition to stops, turnovers will be key, and Sequoias have 13 this year. Safety Ron LaForce leads the team with five. To give LaForce opportunities, up front COS needs to rush the passer. Look for Darren Hambrick and Logan Pierce to create pressure.
Fresno City Rams (4-5, 1-3 VC):
The Rams could be easily 9-1 at this point if it weren't for a handful of close defeats.
In last week's narrow 45-43 victory against San Joaquin Delta, quarterback Andrew Zimmerman threw for 244 yards and 5 touchdowns. The red hot sophomore looks to continue his form this Saturday, with the help of his wide-receiver Marcus Rose. Rose had three catches for 53-yards and two touchdowns last weekend. He also added a 73-yard punt return to his stat line.
Fresno City's defense will need to be crisp to keep their bowl hopes alive. They had key stops last Saturday to give them the victory, and they will need that same type of energy versus COS. Linebacker Tamarcus Russell leads the conference in tackles-per-game with an average of nine.
