
Giants fall in showdown for CVC lead
It was a rough weekend for COS as its eight-match winning streak was snapped by state No. 3-ranked Fresno City on Oct. 11.
The Rams (19-2, 7-0) swept the Giants (12-6, 6-1) during a showdown for sole possession of first place in the Central Valley Conference, 25-18, 25-13, 25-10.
Hazel Martinez (Mission Oak) led COS with seven kills. Christa Pilgrim (Mission Oak) added five kills, while Alexis Carmona (Madera) had nine digs and Sydney Guinn (Exeter) added eight assists.
COS went on to drop two matches during the Cabrillo Classic in Aptos on Oct. 12, losing 26-24, 25-19, 25-15 to No. 20 American River and 25-13, 25-12, 25-16 to No. 10 Cabrillo.
Against American River, Madison Sousa (Hanford West) delivered six kills while Pilgrim contributed five kills and 13 digs. Guinn had 13 assists, Kia Campbell (Coalinga) had 12 assists and Carmona added 21 digs.
Martinez' seven kills led COS against Cabrillo. Pilgrim had five kills and four digs, Carmona had 12 digs and Guinn had 10 assists.
The Giants return to conference play when they travel to Reedley (1-9, 0-7) on Oct. 16. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
COS' next home match is at 6 p.m. Oct. 18 against West Hills-Coalinga (9-6, 5-2). The Giants and Falcons are both listed among the "Best of the Rest" in the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association's state rankings.
