Giants headed to NorCal Regional playoffs
College of the Sequoias' women's volleyball team will play the waiting game now that it has reached the 20-win plateau for the second straight season.
The Giants, who closed the regular season with a 25-18, 25-12, 25-22 home victory over Reedley on Nov. 15, are guaranteed a spot in the Northern California Regional Playoffs. It will be COS' fifth straight trip to the postseason under sixth-year coach Kim Rix.
Playoff pairings will be announced Nov. 21. The NorCal play-in match is Nov. 23 and the first round begins Nov. 26.
COS enters the playoffs having swept five of its past six opponents, including Reedley (2-17, 1-15).
Christa Pilgrim (Mission Oak High) led the way for the Giants with 11 kills and nine digs on a night where she and the program's seven other sophomores were honored in a pre-match ceremony.
All of COS' sophomores made a contribution, with Madison Sousa (Hanford West) delivering nine kills, Karen Rodriguez (Kingsburg) four kills, Jillian Nyberg (Redwood) two kills, Mikayla Grimes (Edison) one kill, Alexis Carmona (Madera) 20 digs, Sydney Guinn (Exeter) 20 assists and Peighton Sisk (El Diamante) four digs.
The Giants also received six kills from Hazel Martinez (Mission Oak), three kills from Teagan Daugherty (Tulare Union), two kills from Victoria Martin (Tulare Western), one kill and two digs from Jayda English (Lemoore), 12 assists from Kia Campbell (Coalinga) one dig from Gia Rozadilla (Central).
As of Nov. 18, COS was one of only 15 teams in the state with at least 20 wins. There are still matches, however, around the state on Nov. 19-20.
The Giants' RPI of .570 ranks 20th in the state.
Last season, COS beat Merced 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 during the NorCal Regional play-in match before losing to Cabrillo 24-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-12 in the first round.
