Former Golden West striker Christian Ibarra's hat trick helped the College of the Sequoias Men's Soccer team shutout Monterey 6-0 at MPC Stadium.
"For us a start like yesterday's game is paramount in setting the tone for the remainder of the season," head coach Scott Rogers said. "We hope that the men continue to play with confidence. We have quite a bit to work on but it's a good start."
The Giants (1-0) got revenge on the Lobos as Monterey defeated COS 2-1 last season.
If the hat trick wasn't enough, Ibarra also assisted on Jose Hernandez's goal. Along with Ibarra and Hernandez, Jonathan Gutierrez also opened his 2016 season account. Gutierrez scored twice with assists from Froylan Magana and Carlos Espinosa. Former El Diamante midfielder Judeh Halim assisted on two of Ibarra's goals.
Giant goalkeepers Luis Rubalcava and Zack Perkins each played a half, with both shutting down the Lobos. The goalies were helped out by captains Daniel Villarreal and Jose Hernandez, who helped preserve the shutout with stellar defense
Sequoias will look to reverse the script yet again on September 2 when they travel to Santa Maria's Allan Hancock College (0-1). Allan Hancock beat COS 2-1 in Visalia last season.
