Men's Basketball drop a heartbreaker at home
VISALIA - The College of the Sequoias men's basketball team fell 84-81 to San Diego Mesa on Saturday night.
The Giants (5-5) cut their deficit down to 5 points with 1:47 remaining in the game thanks to Zac Nuttall's three-pointer.
After free throws made by both teams, COS were still down 81-77 with 46 seconds.
COS forward Kentrey Bynum tipped in the ball for a basket, and nine seconds later he made a layup. The Giants were down one point, 82-81, with 22 seconds remaining in the game.
After a pair of San Diego Mesa (2-8) free throws, Sequoias would have one more chance to tie the game.
COS guard Austin Molezzo fired a three-pointer but was off the mark.
With the loss, the Giants' two game win streak is snapped and they drop to .500 on the season.
Guard Austin Armstead had a team high 20 points in the defeat. He also led the team in assists with 5.
Bynum fell one point short of a double-double, finishing with 9 points and 10 rebounds.
The Giants will now host the Kirby Mannon Pepsi/Wyndham Tournament this weekend at Porter Field House. COS will play Pasadena City in the first round with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday.
