
Second Round Recap of the Kirby Mannon Pepsi/Wyndham Tournament
VISALIA - It took overtime to decide the winner between College of the Sequoias and No. 19 Cerritos, with the Falcons winning 95-90 on Saturday night.
The semi-final game of the Kirby Mannon Pepsi/Wyndham Tournament was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams, featuring 12 lead changes. Both teams were close in every single stat, except points off turnovers. Cerritos (11-2) took advantage and scored 25 points, compared to the Giants 15.
Sophomore guard Tyler Payne led the Falcons to victory, scoring a team-high 28 points in 41 minutes. Forward's Anthony Lefeau had 18 and Dezmon Murphy had 16 in the win.
COS (6-6) guards Isaiah Johnson and Austin Armstead both had stellar games for the second straight night. Johnson dropped 25 points, while shooting 6 of 10 from the three-point line. Armstead had 21 points, but also committed 11 turnovers.
Cerritos will move on to the championship game and face Ventura, Sunday at 4 p.m.
Before the championship game, Sequoias will play in the third place game against No. 6 San Bernardino at 2 p.m.
Day 2 Recap:
Ventura 87 - No. 6 San Bernardino 85
The Pirates advance to the tournament final, as they held on down the stretch and upset No. 6 San Bernardino. Ventura had a big game from sophomore guard Cordel Hankerson, who led Ventura for the second night in a row with 24 points. Pirates guards Calvin Young and Isiah Reyes chipped in 21 and 20 points.
El Camino 81 - Shasta 77
The Warriors bounced back after a first round loss with the help of Ahmad Opeonilenla's double-double off the bench. The freshman forward had 22 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes.
Pasadena 97 - Oxnard 80
South Coast-North Conference leading scorer McKay Anderson exploded for 35 points in the Lancers victory. Pasadena's sophomore guard Dejon Williams achieved a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. PCC also weathered the storm of three Oxnard starters scoring in double figures.
