VISALIA - For the third time this season, College of the Sequoias women's basketball will be competing in a tournament final. COS defeated Ventura 78-61 in the semi-finals of the Gilcrest Tournament on Saturday.
Ventura kept it close in the first half, but the Giants were able to pull away in the second half thanks to Alyssa Gonzales.
Gonzales played 35 minutes and scored 20 points in the victory. She also had 6 assists, with 4 rebounds.
The COS (11-1) bench had two players score in double digits. Isabella Jimenez posted 15 points, shooting 5 of 7 from the three-point line. New Zealand international Darci Finnigan scored 12 points.
With the win, Sequoias will play Mt. San Antonio College in the Gilcrest Tournament final. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Porter Field House.
Giants head coach Ray Alvarado is happy in how far his team has gotten, but there is still a challenge ahead in the final.
"I'm definitely proud of the team," Alvarado said. "They have risen to every challenge and Mt. SAC will pose the biggest yet. Anytime you can make a tournament final means the team is playing hard, unselfish, and with passion. To play in the Gilcrest final is definitely special."
