Preview: Basketball doubleheader set for Wednesday night at Porter Field House
Both men's and women's College of the Sequoias basketball teams are ready to host their fourth double-header at Porter Field House this season.
The men's team will host Columbia at 5 p.m. and the women will play Taft at 7 p.m.
Here is a preview of each game:
Men's Basketball: The Giants look to get revenge after losing earlier in the season to Columbia (10-9, 5-3 CVC). COS struggled on the road, shooting 39-percent from the field.
Sequoias(11-11, 5-3 CVC) will look to string back-to-back wins with the help of forward Kentrey Bynum and guard Zac Nuttall.
The duo combined for 30 points in Saturday's win against Cerro Coso.
Nuttall is second in the Central Valley Conference when it comes to three-point percentage at 44-percent. The sophomore from Santa Clarita is capable of knocking down at minimum four three's per game. He has done it five times this season.
Inside the paint, Bynum has been a force for opponents. The El Diamante alum is averaging close to a double-double each game with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
COS will have to keep a tight lid on Columbia's Lewayne Grant and Deandre Stallings. The two rank fourth and fifth respectively in CVC points per game with a difference of .1. Grant is averaging 17.2 and Stallings is at 17.1.
Women's Basketball: The state's fifth-ranked COS women's basketball is flying high after defeating Fresno City last week in a CVC first-place showdown.
The Giants last won the Central Valley Conference in 2015. Last Wednesday's victory gives Sequoias the inside track to capture the conference crown in 2017.
Giants (19-3, 6-0 CVC) guard Greissen Leslie got her second straight start against the Rams and did not disappoint.
The freshman from Auckland, New Zealand scored a personal season-high 23 points in the victory. She knocked down 7-of-10 three-pointers and hit five in a row at one point in the game.
Leslie got help from her teammate Dojahnae Senegal. The sophomore forward recorded a double-double in her hometown, scoring 21 points and racking up 13 rebounds.
Cougar's guard Brittany Romo will have to score more than her average 14 points if Taft (1-15, 0-7 CVC) has a chance in an upset. She is capable of that, with a season-high 26 points against Siskiyous this season. However, COS shut her down in their previous meeting, limiting her to 11 points.
The Giants will look to extend their winning streak to seven games this Wednesday against Taft.
